Sir John Moore (1761-1809) and Sir Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) campaigned in the Baltic, the Mediterranean and Portugal in 1805-08. It culminated in the defeat of General Junot at Vimeiro and the evacuation on British ships of his French Army to France. For the first time since the start of the war, Britain had secured a European mainland base. This book is not simply a detailed military history nor a biography of the two esteemed generals but draws together the connections between the economic, military, political, and social power that shaped the liberation of Portugal from the French.
