An Evening Talk by  Gareth Glover

Thursday 20 June 2024 in The Kincaid Gallery, The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, Winchester.

Over the last two centuries, a number of books have been published, which try to describe the life of a soldier in the Peninsular War; but they all suffer from one great flaw – the use of memoirs written by soldiers decades later; which brings the age old problem of hindsight very much into play, while they are also tainted by the change in social norms over the period. Gareth has worked solely with journals and letters written at the time and it leads to some very different conclusions about their life on campaign to the one traditionally portrayed.

Gareth Glover is a 63 year old ex Royal Navy officer, who has studied the Napoleonic wars for over 40 years. He has been on a personal crusade to uncover and publish original reminiscences from these wars and has used them to rewrite much of the history of this period – especially Waterloo and life in the army in the Peninsular. He is the editor of over 100 books. He lives in Cardiff with his wife Mary and has two grown up children – Sarah and Michael who are both teachers.
